James Flores Rides Two Fastest Horses On Night One of Remington Park OK-Bred Futurity Trials

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 5, 2019—Leading rider James Flores will have a decision to make when the Restricted Grade 1, $895,210 Remington Park Futurity is run on Saturday, April 20; he qualified the two fastest 2-year-old Quarter Horses from Friday’s trials at Remington Park.

A total of five qualified from the 330-yard heats on Friday. They will join another five qualifiers from trials held Saturday night.

The speedy 2-year-old Lota Shakin Goin On, a gelded son of leading third-crop sire Lota Pyc, out of the Corona Caliente mare DM Hot Hot Hot, was the quickest at 330 yards in the trials, stopping the timer in :16.891 seconds over a fast track. Flores’ other winner, who raced second-fastest was Liarliar Hocksonfire, who hit the wire in :16.915.

Gerald Reed trains Lota Shakin Goin On for Reed and Whiting Ranch of Seminole, Okla. He was bred in Oklahoma by Reed Land & Cattle Co.

Flores broke alertly on top in Lota Shakin Goin On’s trial and pulled away by daylight, winning by 1-3/4 lengths at 4-1 odds. He paid $10.60 to win, $4 to place and $3.20 to show.

Flores was second out of the gate on Liarliar Hocksonfire, but cruised to the lead halfway down the track before getting up to win by a half-length ahead of A Tres Sign, who was another 1-1/4 lengths ahead of third-place finisher Oil Company Bum.

The son of champion and first-crop sire Kiss My Hocks is owned by Jose Guzman and Rito Sosa of Blanchard, Okla., and was bred in Oklahoma by Blazin Farms LLC/Maze Condo from the This Snows Royal champion mare Blazin Fire. Liarliar Hocksonfire, at 2-1 odds, returned $6.40 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.40 to show.

Liarliar Hocksonfire is a half-brother to five black type runners including Grade 2 winner Fire Burning.

Sixty-thousand Ruidoso Select Sale Yearling graduate A Tres Of Sign finished half-a-length off Liarliar Hocksonfire to get the third fastest time of :16.975 seconds. Cristian Esqueda had the riding call aboard the daughter of Tres Seis for owner Thomas Scheckel and trainer Jason Olmstead.

Bred by The Mixer Ranch, A Tres Of Sign, out of RG1 winner First Painted Sign by Pyc Paint Your Wagon, is a sister to Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby(RG3) winner A Tres Of Paint and half-sister to Ruidoso Futurity(G1) winner First Valiant Sign and Hobbs America Derby(G3) winner Apollitical Sign.

Johnny de Capo, a son of multiple grade 2 sire Cap de Capi, posted the most impressive trial win under jockey Gaspar Garcia to get the fourth fastest clocking of :16.982. The sorrel colt was well clear of the field in Race 3, winning by two-lengths.

Oscar Nunez conditions the 2-year-old for owner-breeder Juan Jose Conteras. Johnny de Cap is from the Make It Anywhere mare Dash For Ted. He entered the trials of an eighth place effort in the March 2 Harrah's Entertainment Futurity(G3) trials when he hesitated at the start.

Bobby D. Cox's homebred Celebriti was a half-length winner in trial 9 for trainer Josue Ponce to get the final slot on Friday. Jockey Jesse Levario rallied the half-sister to AQHA Racing Champion Wahoo to post a :17.084 clocking into an 8 mph headwind.

The daughter of leading living sire Corona Cartel is out of the First Down Dash mare First To Celebrate. This is also the family of Champions Duponte and Brimmerton.

The second five fastest qualifiers from each night will be preferred invites to the $100,000-Guaranteed Remington Park Juvenile.

Trainer Trey Wood also won a pair Friday night including the 11th race when Mr Perry Hock, a $70,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate, stopped the timer in :17.088 seconds to get the 6th fastest time, giving him a shot at running in the April 20 $100,0000 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Juvenile on Friday.

It was the second winner on the program for first-crop sire Kiss My Hocks. The gelding, from the Mr Jess Perry mare Mr Perrys Wine, races for owner La Feliz Montana Ranch LLC. Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez had the riding call.

All 11 trials on Friday were contested into a light southerly headwind between 6-8mph.

Total purse and breeders' money for the 2019 Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Futurity(RG1) is $1,285,000 of which $330,000 is paid in trial purse money plus another $60,000 in breeders trial purse awards. That leaves $895,210 for Futurity final purse which includes $70,000 in Breeder awards.

Total funds for the Remington Park Oklahoma Bred Derby(RG2) (trials to run Sunday) are $451,975 which include $90,000 in trial purses plus $30,000 additional in trial purse Breeder awards. That leaves $319,975 in derby finals purse which includes $30,000 in Breeder awards.

"The total payout for the 2019 premier Oklahoma Bred Futurity and Derby program is $1,836,975 including the $100,000 guaranteed juvenile. That makes this one of the richest set of state bred races in the nation," OQHRA Executive Director Debbie Schauf said Friday evening.

Flores now leads the Remington Park jockey standings by six wins over Jimmy Brooks, 22 to 16.

Racing resumes Saturday with race one set for 6 p.m. on a 12-race card, the final 11 are all trials for the Remington Park Futurity. The second-richest futurity of the Remington Park season is restricted to eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-olds.
