Dtl Chasin Tale Wins $162,028 Oklahoma Paint And Appaloosa Futurity At Remington Park

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 23, 2019— DTL Chasin Tale was a full length behind the front-runner in the Grade 1, $162,028 Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity on Saturday night at Remington Park with only 100 yards to go. He found a tremendous burst of speed to get to the wire first by a neck to capture victory.

This 2-year-old Paint gelding, owned by DTL Teel Partnership of Skiatook, Okla., never gave up and jockey Cody Smith knew he had his work cut out for him with yards to go.

"The other filly that we qualified, Babe Wired, she left exceptional (just to his left in the 4-hole)," Smith said. "She left running. About halfway through the race though, I felt pretty confident that I had a lot of run and that I was going to get there."

DTL Chasin Tale is a gelded son of first crop Quarter Horse sire Wagon Tales (QH), out of the SF Royal Quick Flash mare Shez Showin Off, and trained by Matt Whitekiller. It was the third time Whitekiller had taken his photo in the winner's circle for this race, having won the 2015 and 2016 futurities with Painted Turnpike and Paint Me Turnpike. Cody Smith also rode those two winners for Whitekiller.

DTL Chasin Tale earned $62,880 for his owner and now has banked $64,008 in only two starts lifetime.

"We've always liked this colt from the get-go," Whitekiller said of DTL Chasin Tale. "We came in here pretty green and we didn't get to gate those colts after we schooled them. But we figured we had a pretty good shot tonight."

His 9-1 winner stopped the timer for 300 yards in 15.630 seconds on a fast track and was a neck ahead of Heza Fancy Pyc who was another head in front of third-place finisher Babe Wired. DTL Chasin Tale paid $20.80 to win, $9 to place and $7.20 to show. He was bred in Oklahoma by Dean & Tonya Lester.

Jockey Jimmy Brooks rode runner-up Heza Fancy Pyc. Trainer Eddie D. Willis conditions the 2-year-old for owner Charles Leggett. The colt by second-crop Quarter Horse sire Im A Fancy Pyc (QH) was bred by Wade Leggett from the SF Royal Quick Flash mare Sexy Senorita. The Oklahoma-bred picked up $27,886 for second and increased his bankroll to $31,118 including his trial purse win.

Still a maiden in two starts, Babe Wired earned $17,334 for third. Also trained by Matt Whitekiller, Babe Wired is a homebred daughter of CRM Livewire racing for owner-breeders Dan and Kaye Jones. Eugenio Navarrete, Jr., had the riding assignment aboard the filly from the Awesome Chrome mare Biker Babe.
