OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 20, 2019—Jockey Berkley Packer mounted up in the fifth race of the 10 training races at Remington Park on Wednesday and shortly thereafter had ridden not only the fastest 2-year-old Quarter Horse of the day but also the horse with the fastest schooling race for the past two months – Jess My Hocks.

The 2-year-old gelded son of champion and first-crop sire Kiss My Hocks, out of the Take Off Jess mare Jess Charlena, owned by Tom and Kathleen McNally of Guthrie, Okla. and trained by Michelle Hurdle, stopped the timer in the fifth race in :13.237 seconds for 250 yards with a 14 mph tailwind.

It rendered a speed index of 90 for the winner, who finished a head in front of VF Politics N Chicks, an Apollitical Jess gelding who had an 86. That 86 would have tied for the fastest winner of a training race on every other day.

Trainer Jason Omstead saddled VF Politics N Chicks, a $50,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate, for owner Richard Tobin. He is out of the Dashin Bye mare Dashin Chick. Whiting Ranch's homebred Mirandasbaby Lota, a daughter of thrid-crop sire Lota Pyc, won race 10 by three-quarters length. Trainer Shawna Manriquez saddled the sorrel filly out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Saturday Night Ride, to the third fastest clocking of :13.436 seconds, an 82 speed index.

The winners of the other training races Wednesday other than the fastest were:

  • Race 1 – La Desire (f. by Desirio), 13.585, by a half-length, 76 speed index, trainer Alfredo Triana, Sr., owner Karen Dixon
  • Race 2 – Eagle Down (c. by One Famous Eagle), 13.488, head, 80, Jason Olmstead, Tom Maher

He won the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity and the Grade 2, $564,000 Sam Houston Futurity. Kiss My Hocks ran second in the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity.

He won $507,005 more as a 3-year-old, running first in the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Derby and qualifying for the 2015 Grade 1 final of the $2.3 million All American Derby.
