Coronado Bay Impresses In Remington Training Races, Trainer Stacy Hill Saddles Three Winners

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—FEBRUARY 21, 2019—Despite racing into the strongest headwind of the day (20 mph), Coronado Bay, a 2-year-old American Quarter Horse owned by Oscar Padilla, easily had the most impressive win of the eight training races at Remington Park on Thursday.

Under a simple hand ride by jockey Jorge Torres, the colt sired by Remington Park Futurity winner Coronado Cartel was the third winner on the eight-race card for trainer Stacy Charette-Hill.

Coronado Bay broke swiftly from the gate and soon distanced himself to win his 250-yard race in a time of :13.631 seconds for the final event of the session. That was good enough for a 74 speed index on a day when two of the eight schooling race winners earned speed indexes of 49.

The Texas-bred looked a lot like his daddy as he strode home as possibly the most impressive horse that has run in the first three weeks of training races.

He won his heat by 1-¼ lengths ahead of runner-up Special Candy Kisses (13.844), who would have won any of the seven other training races before the final on the card with his 65 speed index.

Padilla paid $20,000 for the Coronado Bay at the Heritage Place Yearling Sale last September. He is out of the first crop from the unraced One Famous Eagle mare Shes The Eagle. The second dam is a First Down Dash half-sister to three-time champion All American Futurity(G1) Ab What A Runner.

Coronado Cartel won $416,178 in his racing career, taking five of seven starts as a 2-year-old, and then one of five as a 3-year-old. He was 2018’s #2 leading first crop sire in the country with over $1 million progeny earnings in his first crop to race.

Runner-up in Race 8, Special Candy Kisses, who held on to that second fastest clocking of :13.84 seconds, is trained by Clinton Crawford. The Oklahoma homebred filly by first-crop sire and champion Kiss My Hocks races for owner/breeder PV Quarter Horses. She is out of the grade 2-placed Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Special Candy Paint.

Have It My Way, a daughter of multiple grade 1 sire Carters Cartel, dueled or the top spot in Race 7. Charlotte-Hill trains the filly out of the grade 3-placed Holland Ease mare, Make Us Proud, for for owner T. Pursel. She is a half-sister to stakes winner American Hustle.

Pursel and Hill also teamed in Race 1 with Fly Relentless Fly who rallied to a nose win over $340,000 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale topper Good Candy P. A son of first-crop sire and champion Hes Relentless, Fly Relentless Fly stopped the clock in :13.95 seconds to record the fourth fastest time Thursday. He is out of the Strawfly Special mare Strawfly Six.

Clinton Crawford saddled Race 1 runner-up Good Candy P for owner Don Cavenaugh. The Good Reason SA colt, out of Send Me This Wagon by Pyc Paint Your Wagon, tied for the day's 5th fastest time of :13.96 seconds.

The earlier races on Thursday’s training race slate were run into headwinds of 18- and 19-mph winds the rest of the day. Other race winners were Allie Fay (race 2, 2YO QH, 14.25, SI 49) trained by Jimmy Padgett; DSL Awesome Chic (race 3, 2YO Pts/Apps, 14.25, SI 49) trained by Matt Whitekiller; Ferrero Rocher TLC, (race 4, 2YO QH, 13.96, SI 60) trained by Clint Crawford; Rrlentless (race 5, 2YO QH, 14.07, SI 56) trained by Gregg Sanders; Allomi (race 6, 3YO-up QH, 13.87, SI 64) trained by Trey Wood.

Pursel was the only owner with duel winners. Other sires with winners were Awesome Chrome, Inseperable and The Louisiana Cartel.
