One Famous Icon Breaks Maiden, Sets Top Mark in Turf Paradise Trials Sunday

PHOENIX, AZ—JANUARY 13, 2019—The royally-bred One Famous Icon, a brother to AQHA Racing champion and leading sire One Famous Eagle, broke his maiden Sunday while setting the top qualifying time for the Turf Paradise Maiden Stake (not back type) at Turf Paradise.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from two trial races contested Sunday afternoon, will return to the Phoenix racetrack on Sunday, January 27th to vie for the winner's share of a $5,000 purse going 350 yards.

In the opening trial, under jockey Joseph Belloc, Jr., One Famous Icon defeated One Sweet Boogie by three-quarters to post the top qualifying time of :15.685 seconds.

Trainer Travis Wheeler saddled the son of leading sire Mr Jess Perry to his first career win, from six starts, for owner Yuriana Ramirez. The 3-year-old colt is out of One Famous Lady by Chicks Beduino.

After make two starts last Spring at Turf Paradise One Famous Icon contested the Rainbow and All American Futurity trials at Ruidoso Downs before returned to Arizona last fall. He has earned $8,972.

Winless in four starts, runner-up One Sweet Boogie held onto the second fastest time of :15.791 seconds. Jockey David Reyes-Frisby had the riding call for trainer Eloy Mendoza.

Amado De La Riva is the owner-breeder of the Arizona-bred daughter of leading sire One Sweet Jess from the Late To Bed mare Shakin Ana Dashin.

The lightly raced Jessa Cat, under jockey Emilio Tapia, got her first career win in the second trial to post the third fastest clocking of :15.808 seconds.

Owned-and-trained by Jose Botello, Jessa Cat is a daughter of second-crop sire Stray Cat from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jessa Runner. She entered the trials off a runner-up effort in the AQRA Turf Paradise Futurity on December 19.

Bred in Missouri by William O. Dale, Jessa Cat's sire is the only Quarter Horse son by former leading Thoroughbred sire Strom Cat. A grade 3 winner, he is from the champion First Down Dash mare Your First Moon. Jessa Cat has compiled a (4) 1-1-1 record and earned $12,139.

One Sweet Jess and Mr Jess Perry had two qualifiers each.
