CLAREMORE, OK—NOVEMBER 10, 2018—Hazel Dazel (11-1) broke first then held off Lota Pyc Chrome to win the $89,680 Mystery Derby by a head Saturday at Will Rogers Downs. Admiral Sting finished another head back in a blanket finish to get third.
Ridden by jockey James Flores, Hazel Dazel completed the 350 yards in :17.584 seconds, a 95 speed index over a "good" racing surface. It was the fourth career win in 16 starts for the daughter of leading sire Corona Cartel. The $36,372 winner's purse rolled her earnings to $84,785.
Trainer R.L. Rick Robinson saddled the bay filly from the stakes winning Feature Mr Jess mare Huckleberry Mojito for owners T. C. and Malechek Flack, III and Louis A. Trey. Reliance Ranches LLC is the breeder.
The Lota Pyc gelding came into the finals on a three-race win streak, stepping into stakes company off an impressive 2-¾ length win for a $10,000-tag two races back.
Veteran trainer Eddie D. Willis saddled third-place finisher Admiral Sting for owner-breeder Jahree Standridge. Jockey Jimmy D. Brooks had the riding call aboard the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess from the Strawfly Special mare Sting Scorpion Sting.
Fourth in the Black Gold 350 Championship(RG3) last year, Admiral Sting raised his earnings to $75,067 after picking up $11,062 for today's effort.
Hazel Dazel returned $22.60 to win, $5.40 to place and $3.80 to show. Lota Pyc Chrome paid $5 and $3 and Admiral Sting's show payoff was $3.40.
Trace Dynasty, Pv Queen Bee Candy, Lota Stars Falling, Vf Adreneline Rush, Perrys Dynasty, Jess Candy Politics and Oltigbitties completed the field.
