LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 21, 2018—The broodmare Mia Ta Fame has given owner Richard Frandsen some outstanding racehorses during her time in the breeding shed.

Her sons have included Decati, a 13-time winner of $276,286, and SS Paydirt, an eight-time winner of $134,403. Racing for Frandsen and his son, Skip, Decati finished third in the 2008 All American Derby, while Frandsen's SS Paydirt won the Grade 2 Sam Houston Classic Handicap.

Mia Ta Fame has now given him another talented runner in the Favorite Cartel gelding Favorite Motion, who on Sunday night posted the fastest qualifying time to the Grade 1, $976,750 Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos.

Ridden by Cruz Mendez for trainer Jose Flores, Favorite Motion left the gate sharply from post number eight and cruised home to a 400 yard time of :19.703. Racing in the 10th and final trial, Favorite Motion finished ¾ lengths ahead of J. Garvan Kelly, Nancy Yearsley, and J.L. Yother's Symbol Of Faith, who also advanced to the Golden State Million with the sixth fastest qualifying time.

Favorite Motion debuted with a 1 ¼ length maiden victory back on August 24, but then had a troubled trip when finishing well behind Governor's Cup Futurity runner-up Favorite Wise Lady in an allowance event on September 21. He made amends for that loss in a big way tonight.

"We had a lot of faith in this horse," Frandsen said. "Early on he posted some average times in his works. My friend said that he was an average horse, but then he had a :12.1 work and then he did what he did in his maiden win. My son called my friend to ask him what he now thought of our 'average' horse. My friend told him, 'when I come down and get in his win picture I guess I'll have to stand in the back row.' It was all in good fun. I'm so happy to have Jose Flores as his trainer. We're just so excited about this horse. We still own the mother and we have a little sister out of her by Kiss My Hocks. We're looking forward to her. We're just having a ball."

A total of 75 runners competed in the trials with the horses with the 10 fastest times moving on to the final on Sunday, November 4.

"I love this sport," Frandsen added. "I'm looking forward to the final. We've told people that Decati was fast - and so was SS Paydirt - but Favorite Motion is faster than Decati was. He's a little more muscular than Decati. Time will tell. We have him in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity trials as well. Hopefully Favorite Motion remains sound and we can pick up a few bucks and we can pay a few bills. What a fun business this is. I'm just loving it. That mare (Mia Ta Fame), she's 16 hands. She's long and she throws length on them. Her sons are not boxy. She's getting older and I've talked to Dr. Steve Burns about getting a few embryos out of her because she's 19 and I'll (eventually) need a replacement."

Meanwhile, Turner Farms' Jess Macho Corona proved once again that he is a star after posting the second fastest qualifying time of night. In the midst of a solid juvenile campaign, the Turner-bred Jess Macho Corona has hit the board in all six of his starts this season led by his third place finish in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 24.

Ridden by Cody Jensen for trainer Paul Jones, Jess Macho Corona will go into the Golden State Million final at the top of his game, and his trial impressive trial victory should make him one of the top contenders to win it all. In his trial, the gelding by Corona Cartel covered the 400 yards in :19.722 while finishing a half-length ahead of Governor's Cup Futurity winner Powerful Favorite. Prior to his trial race, Jess Macho Corona won an allowance race here and before that he was third in a trial to the All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

"In the trials to the All American, he stumbled down to his nose," Jones said. "He got up and still ran third. He would have won the trial if he had not stumbled and maybe he would have qualified to the All American final. He's been overlooked a little bit, but he beat some nice horses in this race and has already finished third in a Grade 1 race. Cody Jensen has really been impressed with this horse. This horse is getting better all of the time."

Jones has been training for Turner Farms for approximately two years. He trained Turner Farms' One Hot Habit to a highly successful 2016 freshman campaign in which she qualified to the Grade 1 All American Futurity, Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and Grade 1 Ruidoso Futurity. She made the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby last year.

Jess Macho Corona is out of Turner Farms' Jess Send Me, a talented mare by Feature Mr Jess who earned $361,595 in her 10-race career. Jess Send Me was the runner-up to Ochoa, Quarter Horse racing's all-time leading money earner, in the 2011 All American Futurity.

Simply by chance, a morning gate drill on Tuesday, October 2 featured a pair of eventual qualifiers to the Golden State Million final in Scott Bryant's Flash And Roll and Matthew Dunn's Apollitical Pence.

"I don't work horses looking for a fast time," said Justin Joiner, who trains Flash And Roll. "I just wanted her to have a work with some company. As it turned out we worked right along with the winner of the first Golden State Million trial. I just wanted her to work evenly with her companion. They both ended up posting pretty good times."

Apollitical Pence worked in :12 flat, while Flash And Roll crossed the wire in :12.10. Both runners came back with excellent victories on trial night. Flash And Roll won the third trial in the third fastest time of :19.756, while Apollitical Pence won the opening trial in the fourth fastest time of :19.784.

Ridden by G.R. Carter, Flash And Roll flew out of the gate from post number two on the way to a tremendous two length victory. Bred by Julianna Hawn Holt, the filly by First Moonflash out of Stylish Jess BR arrived at Los Alamitos after winning her All American Futurity trial by a half-length on day two of qualifiers.

"She won her trial, but she had hard luck," said Mike Joiner, who trained Flash And Roll at Ruidoso Downs before his son, Justin, took over the training duties for her Southern California campaign. "She had the fastest qualifying time after the first seven trials, but then weather conditions changed and she ended up not event making the consolation. That's how it goes. She also qualified to the Ruidoso Futurity, but she didn't get away from the outside post and just didn't run that well."

After her All American trial effort, Flash And Roll headed to Los Alamitos under the care of Justin Joiner.

"She was tired after the 12 hour drive from our training center near Sunland Park in New Mexico," the trainer said. "She acclimated pretty quickly after she got some rest. She has a lot of ability and she really did her job through the very end of this race."

Flash And Roll's dam is the 2009 AQHA champion aged mare Stylish Jess BR, one of the best distaffers at Los Alamitos during her time on the track. She won 11 races and earned $804,298 in a career highlighted by her victory as a 3-year-old over older mares in the Grade 1 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap in 2008. She also won the Grade 1 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship in '09 and the Grade 1 Charger Bar Handicap in 2010 and 2011.

Ridden by Saul Ramirez, Jr. for trainer Monty Arrossa, Apollitical Pence carried the form from that October 2nd drill to his trial race, winning his heat by ¾ lengths over Dr. Steve Burns' Tequila Sangria. Earlier this year, Apollitical Pence qualified to the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and was 10th in the final after a very troubled trip.

"I was about to work Apollitical Pence from the gate when Justin (Joiner) asked if I didn't mind working him with company," Arrossa said. "Justin said 'My filly is pretty nice,' and I told him that it was fine because I wanted to see what my horse could do. Apollitical Pence put a good work and carried it over to this trial.

"He had a great trial race to the Ed Burke Million, but in the final he almost fell," Arrossa recalled. "It was a terrible trip. We rested him after that race and he put on a lot of weight. He just wasn't as sharp in his return race (on September 2). He was just flat on that night. That's why I worked him again and he was a lot sharper."

Sired by Apollitical Jess, who recently broke the single-season earnings record for a North American Quarter Horse sire, Apollitical Pence is out of the unraced mare Send City. Apollitical Pence's granddam is Send Me The Candy, the winner of the Grade 1 Remington Park Futurity in 1996. Dunn Ranch and Womack Cavender Farms bred Apollitical Pence.

The field to the Golden State Million Futurity will also include Rosenthal Ranch's Powerful Favorite, who won the Governor's Cup by a neck on July 28, and Legacy Ranch's Wicked Affair, the winner of the Grade 2 Robert Adair Kindergarten Futurity. Wicked Affair finished with the 10th fastest qualifying after running third behind Jess Macho Corona and Powerful Favorite in the second trial of the night.

The others to advance to the final are Symbol Of Faith, fifth in the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity earlier this year; Tequila Sangria, a half-sister to Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby winner Ynot Walk; You Caught My Eye, third to Powerful Favorite in the Governor's Cup Futurity; and Ali Babe Foose, a finalist to the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity and winner of the Ed Burke Memorial Juvenile.
