Stablemates Finish 1-2 In Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby

ROCKY VIEW, ALB—OCTOBER 21, 2018—Multiple stakes winner Stripsteak exploded late under jockey Ricardo Moreno to get up by a head over stablemate True Cop in the $26,912(US) Canada Quarter Horse Cup Derby Sunday at Century Downs. First Prize Cruise finished another head back in the blanket-finish to take third.

Conditioned by trainer William Leech, Stripsteak completed the 400 yards in :19.822 seconds to get his eighth career win from 13 starts. The $12,233(US) winners' purse boosted his lifetime mark to $40,402.

The California-bred son of multiple stakes sire One Sweet Jess races for owner Charles G. Stojan. Steve Burns, DVM bred the bay gelding from the Separatist mare Ruths Chris.

Leech also saddled runner-up True Copy for owner Stojan. Another California-bred, True Copy is a daughter of champion sire Tr Dasher from the Separatist mare Realistically. Edward Allred bred the graded stakes winner who added $6,056(US) to bring her bankroll to $62.243. J.B. Botello had the riding assignment.

Bred-owned and trained by Tom Kenway, First Prize Cruise earned $2,718(US) for finishing third. The daughter of second-crop sire First Prize Doc is out of the Eye Take Time mare Eye Cruise. Martin Ortiz was aboard the Alberta-bred earner of more than $25,000.

Jd Wagon Boss, Knotty Knita, Dont Hezitate, Bringonthewave, Thisbudsforyou and Jd Fictation completed the field. Atomic Blondie was scratched.
