ALTOONA, IA—OCTOBER 13, 2018—Walcott, a son of multiple stakes sire Tee Cos, got his fourth consecutive win Saturday night when he held off Tempting Annee Gl by a neck in the $123,191 Altoona Derby at Prairie Meadows. First Of 15 was a length off the leaders to get third.
Walcott finished strong under jockey Mauro Salcedo to complete the 400 yards in :19.779 seconds, equaling a 93 speed index. It was the fifth career for the bay colt out of Jess Maganette by Mr Jess Perry.
Alejandro Chavez saddled the two-time derby winner for owner Pedro Gutierrez Marquez. Bred in Oklahoma by Lyle Guillory, Walcott has compiled a (9) 5-1-1 record and the Polk Derby winner's purse of $49,276 nearly doubled his earnings to $93,955. Two races back he won the Mile High Derby at Arapahoe Park.
Last year's Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge winner Tempting Anne Gl earned $20,942 for her second place effort. R.L. Rick Robinson saddled the daughter of multiple stakes sire Tempting Dash for owner Garza Laurel Partnership LLC. Bred in Texas by Francisco Javier Garza, from the Devon Lane (TB) mare Grande Annee, Tempting Annee Gl has earned $74,391.
Also a stakes winner, First Of 15 earned $12,319 for finishing third. Jason Olmstead conditions the daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner Richard Tobin. Bred in Oklahoma by James and Marilyn Helzer, the sorrel filly has earned $129,834. A sister to leading 2-year-old filly Lynnder 16, First of 15 is out of the Corona Cartel mare Tinys Corona Queen.
High Valley Girl, Eagle Deluxe, Hot Dam Bam A Lam, One Jess Streakin, Weetonas Lafawn, Paint A Candy Cat and Vallerro completed the field.
