SHELBYVILLE, IN—JULY 7, 2018— Trainer Ricardo Martinez kicked off the second all-Quarter Horse racing night at Indiana Grand with a pair of wins in the Heartland Futurity Trials. Pritty, ridden by Juan Galvan, rallied home an impressive winner in near track record time followed by stablemate Packin Secrets, ridden by Sergio Ramirez, who was a winner in the second trial.

Starting from the outside post 10 in the first Heartland Futurity trial, Pritty rallied out of the gate and had the field at her heels from the start. The two-year-old daughter of leading first-crop sire Coronado Cartel surged to the lead and opened up on the field in the 300-yard dash, crossing the wire in a dominant time of :15.301 seconds. Filthy Rich, a gelding by world champion One Dashing Eagle, and jockey Shanley Jackson finished two lengths back in second followed by Martinez's other trainee in the race, Chicazum, who finished third with Ramirez aboard.

Pritty is now two for two in her brief career. The chestnut Texas bred filly is owned by Miguel Lechuga. The race favorite, she paid $4.80, $4.40, and $2.80 across the board. Pritty was a $12,000 purchase from the Heritage Place Yearling Sale last fall.

"We bought her ($12,000) at Heritage Place and she has always looked like a promising horse," said Martinez. "She won her maiden at Remington Park and then there were no races for her, so we've been waiting for the trials. After the final, we will see how she comes out of the race. She's paid into the SSA (Stallion Service Auction) Futurity (at Indiana Grand), but we don't know if it is too close to run her back, so we may send her to Texas."

Martinez had another powerhouse entry in the second trial of the night with Packin Secrets, a homebred son of Indiana sire Habits Secret. The start was less than desirable for Packin Secrets, but once he survived some severe bumping, the two-year-old gelding got to work to make up ground for his delayed start. BV Bobbie Sue and Jose Beltran had the lead early over Myplaceinheaven and Natasha Fritz.

The top two battled side by side to the wire before being joined late in the 300-yard dash by Packin Secrets on the inside. Less than two lengths separated the top six finishers at the wire, with Packin Secrets getting the nod by a head over Myplaceinheaven. BV Bobbie Sue finished third. The time of the trial was :15.794 seconds.

"I was really hoping he would qualify for this because he's by our Indiana stallion," said Martinez. "He has been training pretty good all along. We did some gate work with him at Remington, and he wasn't as good as we wanted. He was sick during the baby races here. We brought him here to do some gate work and he broke his maiden right away. We've just been waiting on the trials for him."

Packin Secrets is now two for two in his young career. Owned by Martinez and bred by John Wolpert of Kentucky, the freshman paid $3.60, $3.00 and $2.10 across the board.

Packin Secrets has added interest from Martinez, who campaigned his sire, Habits Secret, to numerous stakes victories and more than $330,000 in career earnings before being retired in 2016 to Dr. Roger Beam's Midwest Equine and Veterinary Hospital in Trafalgar, Ind. The Graded Stakes placed son of No Secrets Here has his first crop on the track this season.

"We have bred very few mares to him (Habits Secret)," said Martinez. "Right now, he has five racing and four have won and the other one has been second. So far, he's looking pretty good as a sire."

The 16th season of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Wednesday, Nov. 7. Racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:05 p.m. EST with Saturday racing beginning at 6:05 p.m. EST. Thursday racing will be held July 19 and Sept. 6 at 2:05 p.m. EST.
