Flash And Roll Stands Out In First Day of Ruidoso QH Futurity Trials

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—MAY 25, 2018—Scott Bryant’s Flash And Roll lived up to her $200,000 purchase price with a standout performance in the first of two days of trials to the Grade 1, $1 million Ruidoso QH Futurity on Friday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.

There were 16 350-yard trials on Friday afternoon and another 16 trials will be held on Saturday afternoon. First post time is noon.

The horses with the five-fastest times on each day of trials advance to the Ruidoso Futurity on June 10. The Ruidoso Futurity winner earns $420,000. The horses with the next five-fastest times on each day gain preference to compete in the $100,000 Ruidoso Juvenile.

Flash And Roll, who sold in the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, made her debut in the 15th trial and dominated her competition. She drew out to a one-and-one-half length win and her time of :17.796 was easily the quickest mark. G.R. Carter Jr. was aboard.

"She did really well in her schooling race (on May 7) and we’ll see how she does," said trainer Mike Joiner.

A daughter of leading sireFirst Moonflash from the champion mare Stylish Jess Br, the dark-hued Flash And Roll, obviously, is a fast horse with a promising future. Joiner said she also has an excellent mind. "I think she’s good-minded enough to keep me from messing her up," quipped Joiner.

Blue Corazon, under champion jockey Ricky Ramirez, posted the second fastest time off a 1-½ length winning effort in trial 10.

Joiner and Carter first thought they had a special horse in a workout at Sunland Park. At the start of the work, Carter lost a stirrup and she was still able to outwork her company by daylight.

The other four qualifiers from Friday’s trials are Blue Corazon (:17.985), Tempting Special (:18.005), Pj Splash Of Joy (:18.014) and The Runaway Favorite (:18.036). There was a headwind for the trials.

Newman Cattle Company, LLC’s Blue Corazon also made his first start in the Ruidoso Futurity trials. The gelding by first-crop sire Coronado Cartel won the 10th trial by one-and-one-half lengths.

The Rodolfo Valles-trained Blue Corazon also won his training race in preparation for the Ruidoso Futurity trials

Blue Corazon was one of two horses that jockey Ricky Ramirez qualified for the Ruidoso Futurity. He was also aboard The Runaway Favorite.

"He ran really well in the schooling races," said Ramirez, who won four trials. "It’s good to have choices."

Simmons Racing’s Tempting Special, trained by Toby Keeton, pushed his record to two-for-two when he won the fourth trial by one-half length under Agustin Silva. The gelding by Tempting Dash scored by a neck in a 300-yard maiden race at Remington Park on April 13.

Holmes Racing Stables, LLC’s Pj Splash Of Joy finished nonthreatening second behind Flash And Roll in their trial with a time quick enough to reach the futurity finals. The John M. Cooper-trained filly is sired by First Moonflash and her dam is Jenuine Joy, the producer of 2016 All American Futurity winner Imperial Eagle. She was ridden by Manuel Gutierrez while making her first start.

Bobby Simmons’ The Runaway Favorite, a gelding by Favorite Cartel, may be the day’s final qualifier, but ran like a horse with a future as the races get longer. The Blane Wood-trained gelding flew on the outside in the last half of the seventh trial to win by an expanding three quarters of a length under Ramirez. It was his first start and he won his training race.

"I like him a lot," said Wood. "He has a big future. He can run on down the track."

First Moonflash and first-crop sire Coronado Cartel were the only sires with multiple qualifiers in the Friday's top-ten. First Moonflash sired two in the finals and one in the Juvenile while Coronado Cartel got one in the final and one in the Juvenile.
