Playn Captain Much The Best In Maiden Frolic Final

OGDEN, UT—MAY 19, 2018—After going 0-for-5 last season, Kelly and Kyle Cook's 3-year-old Playn Captain got his second consecutive win Saturday when he easily put away a field 10 in the $21,455 Maiden Frolic (not black type) at Weber Downs.

Under jockey Nakia Ramirez, Playn Captain completed the 350 yards in :17.896 seconds, a 96 speed index, to win by one-length. Trainer Jay Pitcher conditions the Idaho-bred son of multiple stakes sire Captain Courage.

Mark and Peggy Brown bred Playn Captain from the A Regal Choice mare Playful Choices. The chestnut gelding came into the finals as the second fastest qualifier after breaking his maiden in the May 6th trials. The $9,869 winners' purse boosted his earnings to $11,765.

Candy Cartels Okay, owned-and-trained by Luis Gonzalez, picked up $4,291 for his second-place effort. Still a maiden from four career starts, the Oklahoma-bred son of Cartels Candy Man has finished second twice. The Estate of Carl Pevehouse bred the sorrel gelding from the Okey Dokey Dale mare This Candys Okay. Joseph Belloc, Jr. was riding.

Tom Peffer's Light Up The Dark finished 1-½ lengths back to take home the third-place purse worth $2,146. Tyson Lusk had the riding call for trainer Travis Offret aboard the California-bred daughter of Hawkinson from the Chicks Beduino mare Iba Quick Chick.

Classy Miricle 142, Outlaw Trail, Jessa Clean Slate, Movin Bac, Wumba Man, Mias Irish Dynasty and Will He Be Quick completed the field.
