Wagon On Fire V Scores Slight Upset in $187,950 Grade 3 West Texas Derby

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 30, 2018—Wagon On Fire V, under jockey Raul Herrera, drove down the outside to defeat Dominate This by a neck in the 55th running of the $187,950 Grade 3 West Texas Derby Saturday afternoon at Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. Posttime favorite He Be Flashy finished a nose back in a blanket finish to get third.

Let go at over 6-1 odds, Wagon On Fire V unleashed a wicked late surge from his outside draw to win by a neck in final strides of the 350 yard dash.

Wagon On Fire V gave trainer Ricardo Armendariz and jockey Raul Herrera, back-to-back stakes wins on Sunland's Park's Saturday card. The duo also won the $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (see related story) in the prior race.

Armendairz conditions Wagon On Fire V for owner-breeder Valeriano Racing Stables LLC. The son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon was bred in Oklahoma from the multiple graded winning Sixes Royal mare Sixy Chamisa.

Wagon On Fire V has compiled a (7) 2-2-0 record and the $88,337 West Texas Derby winners' purse pushed his career bankroll to nearly $103,000.

James J. Gonzales, II saddled runner-up Dominate This for owners Angel Hernandez and Jorge Herrera. Emilio Tapia rode the Oklahoma-bred son of Dominyun from the Valiant Hero mare Valiant Red Vixen. The multiple stakes-placed gelding earned $33,881 to nearly double his earnings total to $65,601.

Third-place finisher He Be Flashy put in gallant effort under jockey Manuel Gutierrez. John Cooper trains the son of champion sire First Moonflash for the partnership of Jack Manning, Beth Cobb and Diane Norwood. Sam and Karen Tanner bred the multiple stakes-placed earner of $94,290 in New Mexico.

Wagon On Fire V rewarded backers with a $15.60 win $7.80 place and $4.00 show payoff. Dominate Tis returned $5.80 and $4.20 and He Be Flashy paid $3.20 to show.

Completing the field were Jessica Alexandra, Cessna On Fire V, Estrella Damm, Jess Move You, Siximoons, Camellia and The Flash Force.
