LOS ALAMITOS, CA—MARCH 22, 2018— Jose Flores was well represented during morning drills on Saturday at Los Alamitos. The trainer had 20 working from the gate and by the end of a busy session, his juveniles posted five of the seven fastest clockings.

Humberto Moya’s Jess Wong and Mario Farias’ Shez A Dashin PYC topped the works on Saturday after working together at 220 yards in a time of :12.10 for Flores. The trainer also had One Dashing Chick go in :12.20, while Jess Motions and Favorita First worked as a set in a time of :12.20. He also had One Dashing Chick go in :12.20.

Jess Wong was one of the stars of the day after her :12.10 clocking from the inside post. The One Sweet Jess filly is out of the stakes winner Attack The Cartel, who earned $49,990 during a racing career that included a win in the 2013 Native Empress Handicap and a spot in the Grade 1 Southern California Derby.

"When we bought (Jess Wong) at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale, I had her full sister named On Our Way," Flores said. "She qualified for me to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. I’ve always thought that Burns Ranch bred a heck of a horse. (Jess Wong) looked a lot like On Our Way. I thought Jess Wong was going for a good price so we bought her for owner Humberto Moya (for $13,000). Mr. Moya has been close to qualifying to futurities at Los Alamitos. Hopefully we can get a nice one for him and get into some futurities."

Shez A Dashin PYC is by Pyc Paint Your Wagon and out of First Down Dream, the dam of PCQHRA Breeders Derby and Futurity winner Ima Chickie Two ($346,598).

"I really liked that filly since I saw her as a baby," Flores said. "Mr. Mario Farias purchased her privately from Don and Kathy Meneely after she didn’t sell at Ruidoso. She reminds me a lot of Ima Chickie Two because she’s light on her feet and has good size. She’s by PYC Paint Your Wagon and you can’t ask for much better than him as a sire."

Sired by One Dashing Eagle, One Dashing Chick is out of the aforementioned Ima Chickie Two, who also ran second to Terrific Synergy in the 2012 Governor’s Cup Derby in addition to sweeping the PCQHRA Breeders Series. The other :12.2 workers are Jess Motions, a filly by Apollitical Jess and out of Royal Motions, and Favorita First, a filly by Favorite Cartel and out of Eyell Fool Ya.

Flores liked what he saw from many of his 2-year-olds on Saturday.

"We had a few that went really well. Nautical C (gelding by PYC Paint Your Wagon and out of Vikes Dashing) did well and so did Favorite Motion (colt by Favorite Cartel and out of Mia Ta Fame). Could Be Hotter (colt by Walk Thru Fire and out of Look Her Over) was also impressive. Special Of Course (colt by Walk Thru Fire and out of Special And Proud) didn’t break very well in this, his first work, but kept to his task. A couple by Special Cartel and Mr Ease Cartel that I like. They’re doing their jobs. We have some well-bred horses. We are hoping for some racing luck and that the horses remain sound. If all this happens we should be okay."

Nautical C, from the family of champion and Grade 1 winner Miss Racy Jess and Kiddy Up, worked in :12.4, while Favorite Motion, a sister to All American Derby third place finisher and Bitterroot Futurity winner Decati, also went in :12.4. Could Be Hotter, a full brother to multiple Grade 1 winner He Looks Hot and graded stakes winner Once Over, worked in :12.50.

Flores was also excited to see Sheza Dasha Fire, a full sister to 2015 AQHA World Champion Heza Dasha Fire and half-sister to millionaire champion Ima Fearless Hero, covered the 220 yards in :12.5 in her first work.

"Obviously, it’s hard to find another horse with the talent of Heza Dasha Fire," Flores said. "They don’t come along very often. His younger brother, Ima Fearless Hero, earned a lot of money and was talented, but never quite as talented as the big horse. This filly is coming along great. I thought it was an excellent work. She didn’t leave the gate very well, but finished strongly, which I like. She worked against New Girl, who is a daughter of (Kindergarten Futurity winner) Old Girl. They both looked good. I’m real happy when babies work between :12.5 and :12.7 in their first work. Hopefully they can keep sound and continue on."

Other notable juveniles on Saturday included:

• One Way Woman (California-bred filly by Stel Corona and out of Hard Lining) – She equaled the morning’s fastest time of :12.10. Her mother is the dam of Ed Burke Million Futurity runner-up Unchangeable. This is the family of stakes winners Hard Hitting, Hot Hitter, Lassen County, Freaky, etc.
• Thrillofbeingfirst (Texas-bred filly by First Moonflash and out of Thrill And Grace) – She worked in :12.30 and is a half-sister to Aha Moment, a winner of $318,882 and third place finisher in the All American Futurity and fifth place finisher in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in 2012.
• Corona Krush (an Oklahoma-bred colt by Corona Cartel and out of Azoom Babe) – He worked in :12.30 and is a half-brother to Valiant Rogue, winner of the Grade 1 Rainbow Derby in 2016 and of $665,562. Azoom Babe qualified to the 2009 La Primera Del Ano Derby and won the Fair Meadows Belle Stakes in 2010.
• Hamilton (California-bred colt by Walk Thru Fire and out of Brigtherthanthesun) – He worked in :12.30. Granddam is Summertime Quickie, the mother of champion Foose, stakes winner Flay, and stakes placed filly Summertime Favorite. Brighterthanthesun ran in the 2014 La Primera Del Ano Derby.
• Improvise (California-bred filly by Walk Thru Fire and out of Coronas Rouge) – She worked :12.30 and is a half-sister to 2011 Kindergarten Futurity finalist Red Dasher. Coronas Rouge qualified to the Grade 1 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity in 2006.
