OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 24, 2018—In April 2017, La Vencedora won the Remington Park Futurity. Saturday night at Remington Park, she was triumphant by a half-length in the Grade 3, $218,000 Oklahoma Derby.

Owned by Good Memories LLC of Claremore, Okla., La Vencedora is trained by Amanda Tongay. The 3-year-old filly was ridden by James Flores who has been her pilot for all of her career races and respects her consistent ability.

"She’s definitely an honest horse. Every time I ride her she gives 100-110 percent. As a rider, that’s a good feeling to get on that kind of horse.

"She broke about half-a-side off and the three (Defender One), who out-broke me. As soon as she spotted him, she made a big run. I hustled her down the lane and she just ran her heart out."

Once clear of most of the field about halfway through the 350 yards, La Vencedora had to contend with Sugars First Love to her outside but was able to easily hold her at bay, crossing the finish in :17.419 over the fast track. Onewickedchick was a head behind the runner-up for third.

Away at 7-2 odds in the wagering, La Vencedora paid $9.20 to win, $5 to place and $4 to show. Sugars First Love returned $4.60 to place and $4 to show. Onewickedchick paid $6.60 to show. Curls Happy Wagon was the beaten betting favorite at 2-1 odds, running sixth, 1-3/4 lengths behind the winner.

La Vencedora was bred in Oklahoma by Bobby Cox. She was sold at the 2016 Heritage Place Yearling Sale for $16,000. A filly by Ivory James from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Shakem, La Vencedora’s Oklahoma Derby score is her fifth career win from eight attempts, with three of the victories at Remington Park.

The first-place check in the derby is worth $87,200, boosting her all-time bankroll to $504,196.

The lightly raced Sugars First Love picked up $37,060 for her second-place effort. Champion jockey Ricky Ramirez rode the Tempting Dash filly for owners Randy and Sandy Coleman and trainer Trey Wood. Bred in Texas by Sue Fikes, Sugars First Love is out of the Prime Talent mare Loves Brown Sugar. A finalist in the RG2 TQHA Sale Futurity last year, Sugars First Love has banked $57,320 in only five starts.

In just her third career start Onewickedchick earned $23,980 for finishing third for owner/breeder Francisco Vega. Trainer Manuel Almanza, Jr. conditions the Chicks Regard Oklahoma-bred out of Wicked Seis by Tres Seis. Jockey Cesar Gomez was riding.

Completing the Oklahoma Derby field were Dashing Sashay, Htr Miamor Tequilla, Curls Happy Wagon, Defender One, Pyc Fun And Fancy and Little Kool Corona. Apollitical Cyclone was scratched at the gate prior to the race.

The American Quarter Horse Season continues Sunday, March 25 with the first race at 1:30pm-Central.
