Big Finish Pushes Toughie To Victory in AQHA Aged Stakes, Heza Riot Awarded Derby Win

LETHBRIDGE, ALB—SEPTEMBER 17, 2017—A big finish under jockey Freddy Fuentes propelled multiple stakes winner Toughie to a three-quarter length win over Splashy Mamacita in the $8,612(US) AQHA Aged Stakes (not black type) Sunday at Lethbridge. Big Hoss Rollin finished 1-¼ lengths back to get third.

Trainer William Leech saddled the daughter of Stel Corona to her 12th win in 16 starts for owner Charles Stojan. The chestnut filly earned $4,463(US) to increase her bankroll to $157,541. Toughie completed the 400 yards in :19.905 seconds, a 96-speed index into a 27-mph crosswind.

A finalist in the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity as a 2-year-old, Toughie was bred in California by Edward C. Allred. She is out of the Hawkish mare Hard Lining.

Janice Sather saddled runner-up Splashy Mamacita for herself and Barry Sather. The Alberta homebred daughter of Volcom is out of Pizazzy by Splash Bac. Ridden by Alejandro Almazan, the 5-year-old mare picked up $2,239(US) for the effort.

Finishing third, Big Hoss Rollin races for owner Deanne Davies and trainer Robert Gwilliam. Neville Stephenson rode the stakes winning son of Zillas Spin Doctor from the Dashing Val mare Sables Val. Bred by Sazwan Speed Horses, the 5-year-old earned $1,033(US).

Er Cafe and Go Jessin Beaver completed the field.

Heza Riot Awarded Derby Division 1 Victory

Following a disqualification of Tac It Perry, Heza Riot, a son of multiple stakes sire Corona Czech, was placed first in the $6,397(US) Derby Division 1 (not black type) at Lethbridge Sunday afternoon.

Tac It Perry lugged in and bothered Heza Riot in the stretch causing the stewards to reverse the order of finish.

J. Botello rode Heza Riot over the 400 yards in :20.432 seconds into a 27-mph crosswind. Trainer Allen Goodsell saddled the brown gelding to his third career win for owner/breeder Mark Cassel. Out of the Lock To Load mare Platinum N Pearls, Heza Riot earned $3,390(US).

Ridden by jockey Alejandro Almazan, Tac It Perry is a Texas-bred son of Tac It Like a Man from the Mr Jess Perry mare Quickid Perry. Racing for owns Barry and Janice Sather, the gray gelding is conditioned by Janice. He earned $1,663 for second. A full brother to Tac It Perry's dam was the second high-seller at the just completed Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale for $310,000.

Munckin, a son of Special Fly Bye racing for owner WestWind Oilfield Services, finished three-quarters off the leaders for third. Buckey Stockwell trains the gelding out of Cleats Rockette by Dashing Cleat. He pocked $768(US) for third. Jose Rocha was up.

Streakinbabe, Stupendous 109 and Hitting Wind completed the field.
