Cowboys Dynasty Tops AQRA President's Open Spring Derby Trials

PHOENIX, AZ—MARCH 25, 2017—Stakes winner Cowboys Dynasty overcame shaky start to defeat Fitz by a neck while setting the top qualifying time for the AQRA President's Open Spring Derby Saturday afternoon at Turf Paradise.

The 10 fastest 3-year-olds, from three trial races conducted over 350 yards on Saturday, will return to the desert racecourse on Sunday, April 8th to vie for the winner's share of the $10,000-added purse.

Under jockey Jesus Osuna, Cowboys Dynasty stumbled at the start and was bumped but quickly recovered to take a slight lead and complete the 350 yards in :17.745 seconds, a 94-speed index into a 12-mph headwind.

Owned-and-trained by Alvaro Monteverde, the son of world champion sire FDD Dynasty entered the trials off a runner-up effort in the Rillito Derby last month. The winner of the AQRA-Turf Paradise Futurity in December has won five of his last six career starts.

Corner K Quarter Horses, LLC bred the stakes winner of more than $42,000 from the On A High mare Mexican Radio.

The aforementioned Fitz, a royally bred son of leading sire Mr Jess Perry from the First Down Dash mare Dividends Declared, held on to the second fastest time of :17.783 seconds, a 93-speed index.

Ricard Ramirez conditions the gelding for owner Yuliana Ramirez. Mark Jasso was aboard the Double Bar S Ranch, LLC California-bred.

Last season's Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge winner Apollitical Boogie was a half-length winner in the final trial to get the third fastest time of :17.829 seconds, a 92-speed index into a 20-mph headwind.

Rodolfo Arvizu rode the Apollitical Jess gelding for owner/breeder Armada De La Riva. The Arizona-bred stakes winner has compiled a (8) 3-1-0 record and banked $28,508. He is out of Shakin Ana Dashin by Late To Bed.

Stakes winner Movin The Doe, under jockey Emilio was a nose winner over Arizona Icon in the first trial to get the fifth qualifying time of :17.852 seconds, a 91-speed index into an 18-mph headwind.

Ubaldo Guerrero saddled the Makin Moves gelding for owner Luis Gonzalez. Bred in Utah by Steve Berry, Movin The Doe has won five of 11 career starts and earned $54,822. He is out of the Hennessy (TB) mare Bundle Doe.
