TQHA Yearling Repurchase Suenos Dineros Sets Fastest Mark in Grade 2 West Texas Futurity Trials

SUNLAND PARK, NM—MARCH 24, 2017—Suenos Dineros, a $7,500 repurchase at the 2016 TQHA Yearling Sale, set the top qualifying time for the $230,100 West Texas Futurity (G2) from nine time trials contested at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Friday.

The finals for the 59th running of the 300 yard West Texas Futurity(G2) will be held on Saturday, April 15. The winner will earn $108,147.

Suenos Dineros, a son of third crop sire Bodacious Dash, exploded late under jockey Jose Enriquez to defeat fellow qualifier Mr Perrys Tres Seis by three-quarters of a length. The 2-year-old gelding won the 4th trial heat for trainer Shae Cox. Suenos Dineros covered the 300 yards in a fast 15.215 seconds, a 90-speed index with a 22-mph tailwind, to lockdown the top qualifying spot.

The first foal from the Tres Seis mare Tres Suenos, Suenos Dineros was bred in Texas by Eugene Therwhanger. The third dam is the dam of Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity(G1) and Golden State Million Futurity(G1) winner Tres Passes. This is the family of world champion Merganser.

Cox also qualified Rosicky, a Louisiana-bred son of Tee Cos, for the West Texas Futurity finals following an impressive win in the 2nd trial in a time of :15.281 seconds. Her third qualifier came with Phantom Fury, by One Sweet Jess, who was third in the first trial in a time of :15.338 seconds.

Mountain Holme kicked off the day in the first trial to defeat Jm Katyln by a nose while posting the second fastest time of :15.241 seconds with a 12-mph tailwind. Owner Eduardo Lugo purchased the Gone To The Mountain filly in the TQHA Yearling Sale for $4,400. Jimmy Guerra, Jr. saddled with jockey Ruben Calderon getting the riding assignment.

It was the first win in two starts for the Curtis Crenwelge Texas-bred out of Quick Way Home by Royal Quick Dash.

Half the field, five horses, qualified from the opening trial.

The 2015 West Texas Futurity winning trainer Justin Joiner saddled winners of the final three trials on Friday and qualified two runners Final Down, a Carters Cartel filly who was 4th fastest, and Famous Corona Miss, a Fantastic Corona Jr filly, who ended the day on the bubble.

The $800,000 Sunland Derby will be the 9th race in a 10-race card worth over $1.5 million on Sunday. The $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks, $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes, $100,000 Harry Henson Handicap, $100,000 La Coneja Stakes, $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Derby and $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks help make up the stellar card.

Advance wagering for Sunday’s card will be available on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. The Sunland Derby Day handicapping seminar starts at noon on Sunday in the Signature Showroom. Tom Dawson, Robert Geller and Julie will host the free event.

Simulcasting of the Dubai World Cup starts early on Saturday morning at 8 am. Breeder’s Cup Classic and $12 million Pegasus World Cup winner Arrogate is the 1-3 favorite for the $10 million Dubai World Cup (9th race).
