FREDERICKSBURG, TX—AUGUST 28, 2016—Runner-up in the TQHA Sires' Cup Futurity(RG3) last month, Katharsis battled Flying Red Corona to the wire Sunday to get nose victory in the $146,350 Gillespie County Fair Futurity. Fastest qualifier Ardor finished a neck back to take third in the blanket finish.
Ridden by jockey Eddie Sanchez, Katharis completed the 350 yards in :17.670 seconds, a 98-speed index into a 10 mph crosswind. The $51,222 winners' purse more than doubled the American Runaway filly's earnings total $72,690.
Jose Sanchez conditions the gray filly for owner Emmanuel Villarreal. Bred by Bobby Cox, from the First Down Dash mare All About Ease, Katharis has compiled a (6) 3-1-0 record.
Adrian Huitron saddled runner-up Flying Red Corona for owner/breeder Grant Farms, LLC. Alfonso Lujan rode the Corona Cartel filly from the Strawfly Special mare The Long Straw. Bred in Louisiana, the chestnut filly earned $21,853,
Fastest qualifier Ardor hit the gate but flew late to finish third for owner Double H Racing Investments. Also bred by Bobby Cox and trained by Adrian Huitron, the Ivory James gelding is out of the First Down Dash mare First Fervor. Third in the Grade 3 Harrah's Futurity in March, Ardor earned $14,636 to bring her bankroll total to $44,495.
Completing the field were Rb Rockin Pop, Pool Runner, JE And Thee, Jess Ponyupmr, Df Dashing Champ and Jmf Western Cartel.
