Vodka At Moonlight Steps Up In Minnesota Stallion Breeders' QH Futurity Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN—JUNE 26, 2016—Vodka At Moonlight cruised to a one-length win over Faster Than Hasta in the Minnesota Stallion Breeders' Quarter Horse Futurity on Sunday to post the top qualifying mark.

The 10 fastest two-year-olds, sired by participating stallions in the two trial races contested, will return to Canterbury Park Sunday July 10th to vie for the winner's share of a $50,000 purse at 350 yards.

A Minnesota homebred for owner/breeder Summer Run Inc., Vodka At Moonlight scored her second win in as many starts this season. Under jockey Brian Velazquez the daughter of first crop sire Triple Vodka completed the 350 yard task in :18.347 seconds into a 36 mph headwind to secure the top qualifying time.

Jason Olmstead saddled the black filly that entered the trials off a maiden victory for a $10,000 tag at Remington Park on May 21. Out of the Oak Tree Special mare Moonlight Masquerade, Vodka At Moonlight has earned $13,410.

Olmstead saddled three finalists to the futurity including 8th qualifier Its Crunch Tyme, also a Summer Run Inc. homebred by first crop sire Feature Mr Bojangles.

The aforementioned Faster Than Hasta held onto the second fastest qualifying time of :18.641 seconds. The Hasta Be Fast gelding was the first of three finalists saddled by trainer Robert Don Johnson.

Ridden by Stormy Smith, Faster Than Hasta is owned by John G. Johnson. Wardell Quarter Horses bred the two-time starter in Wyoming from the Special Leader mare Leadmetoyourladder.

Johnson also trains third fastest qualifier Toast On Fire for owner/breeder Legacy Ranch, Inc. Ridden by David Pinon, the daughter of Fighter On Fire was squeezed back at the start but rallied to win the second trial by half-a-length in a time of :18.674 seconds into a 38 mph headwind.

It was the first win in two starts for the 2-year-old that finished fourth for a $12,500 tag on June 12th at Canterbury Park. The sorrel filly is out of the Toast To Dash mare Toast To Gypsy.

Jess Jones sired the 4th and 9th fastest qualifiers and first-crop sire Paintyourownwagon got the 7th fastest qualifier.
