Iowas Texan Tlp Sets Top Mark in Gopher State Derby Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN—MAY 29, 2016—Making his first start of the year, Iowas Texas Tlp raced to a three-quarter length win and the fastest qualifying time for the Gopher State Derby at Canterbury Park this afternoon.

The 10 fastest qualifiers, from two trial races conducted today, will return to Canterbury Park Sunday, June 12th to vie for the winners' share of a $29,500 purse going 400 yards.

Coming off a second place effort in the Jim Bader Futurity at Prairie Meadows last fall, Iowas Texas Tlp covered the 400 yards in : 20.173 seconds, a 93 speed index into a 20 mph crosswind, get the top qualifying mark. Nik Goodwin had the riding call.

Trainer Ed Hardy saddled the Tempting Dash gelding to his third win in seven starts for owner Christine Hovey. Bred in Iowa by Luis Gerardo Aguirre, from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Del Rae, Iowas Texas Tlp has earned $54,903.

Two-time futurity winner and G1-placed Eagles Span rolled to a two-length win, under jockey Cody Smith, in the second trial to post the second fastest time of :20.289, a 90 speed index into a 24 mph crosswind.

Jason Olmstead conditions the One Famous Eagle colt for owners Tom and Bill Maher. Bred in Texas by Entrust Rt Service Inc./FBO Tiffin, Eagles Span has won five of 10 starts and earned $156,653. Out of the First Down Dash mare Tiny First Effort, the sorrel colt was second in the Grade 1 $255,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship at Zia Park last fall.

Trainer Jason Olmstead saddled four of the 10 qualifiers.
