Effortlessly Strut Sets Top Mark in NCQHRA Futurity Trials, Olmstead Saddles Five Qualifiers

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 26, 2015—Effortless Strut rolled to the top qualifying mark and trainer Jason Olmstead saddled half the field of qualifiers for the NCQHRA Futurity Sunday afternoon at Canterbury Park.

The 10 fastest two-year-olds, from the four trial races contested on Sunday's race card, will return to Canterbury Park on Sunday, August 9 to vie for the winner's share of a $40,000-est. purse going 350 yards.

Effortlessly Strut, an Oak Tree Special filly owned by Jerry Oxner and trained by Randy Weidner, dueled early then drew away by three-quarters of a length to win the second of four trials. She set the top qualifying mark of :17.953 seconds, a 93 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.

Coming off an equally impressive 1¼-length Allowance win on June 28, the bay filly has won three of four starts this season. Dale Beaty was aboard the South Dakota-bred out of Expect Magic, by Struttin To Beduino. Bred by Rodney Ruzsa, Effortlessly Strut has earned $15,846.

Cartel Dakota was the first of five finalists saddled by trainer Jason Olmstead. The filly by first crop sire Favorite Cartel broke her maiden in the first trial while clocking the second fastest time of :17.990 with a 5 mph tailwind. Jorge Torres rode the North Dakota homebred for owner/breeder Randal Schwartz. She is out of the Major Rime mare Nd Bunny Jet.

Olmstead also qualified trial 3 winner Bad Girl Phase 3rd; Expensive Paint Job 4th; Divas Candy Girl 5th; and Eagles Span 6th.

Coming off a win in the $141,000 Mystic Lake Northlands Futurity on July 5, Eagles Span stumbled at the start of the first trial but recovered under jockey Cody Smith to finish third and post the sixth fastest time time. Olmstead trains the One Famous Eagle colt, out of Tiny First Effort by First Down Dash, for Tom and Bill Maher. He has won three of five starts and earned nearly $90,000 this season.
