Sleepers Best Corona Wakes Up With Winning Effort In The $50,000 Miss Polly Classic At Delta Downs

VINTON, LA—JUNE 27, 2015— Frank Venson’s Sleepers Best Corona got up late to win Saturday’s night’s $50,000 Miss Polly Classic (G3) at Delta Downs. Under jockey Martin Rubalcava, Sleepers Best Corona got the lead nearing the finish line but had to hold on for dear life as race favorite Dashin for a Prize finished with a rush and wound up second by just a nose. Heza Fast Rogue finished another length behind the top pair in third.

Sleepers Best Corona, who is trained by Carlos Saldivar, covered the 400 yards of the Miss Polly Classic in a time of 19.732 after breaking from the outside in a field of nine. The clocking earned him a speed index of 91.

The victory by Sleepers Best Corona marked the sixth of his 12-race career and his first at Delta Downs. He most recently finished a fast-closing fifth in the Develop a Plan Stakes on May 30 before his triumph on Saturday night, which earned him a sum of $30,000. He has now banked $98,635 during his career.

Sleepers Best Corona is a 4-year-old gelding by Coronas Prospect, out of the Strawfly Special mare Call Me the Sleeper. He was bred in Oklahoma by Southern Rose Ranch.

Dash For Cash Derby (G2) winner Dashin For A Prize races for owner Oscar Moreno and trainer Eric Palacio. Ridden by Randy Edison, the Heza Fast Dash 4-year-old used the $10,000 runner-up check to boost his earnings total to $145,450. Philip Deville bred the gelding in Louisiana from the Oak Tree Special mare Fast Prize Angie.

Also a stakes-winning 4-year-old son of leading sire Heza Fast Dash, Heza Fast Rogue has earned $261,700 for owners Brock and Jacque Broussard. Kevin Broussard saddled the Louisiana-bred from the Mr Jess Perry mare Miss Jess Rogue. Donald Watson had the riding assignment.Triple M Farms, LLC is the breeder.

Sent to the gate at odds of 14-1, Sleepers Best Corona paid $30.80 to win, $11.40 to place and $8.20 to show. Dashin for a Prize returned $4 to place and $3 to show. Heza Fast Rogue was worth $5.60 to show.

Rusty Bloom, Hesablackmagic, The Lizzard King, Ld Streakin N Leavin, Runaway Mystery and Lil Famous Dash completed the official order of finish.

Delta Downs embarks on its next-to-last week of racing on Wednesday night with another 10-race program that starts at 6:15 pm CT. Next week’s action includes the $20,000 Par-A-Dice Stakes on Thursday, the $171,630 Firecracker Derby on Friday and the $318,120 Firecracker Futurity (G2) on Friday.
