Painted Turnpike Still Perfect, Wins Victoria Ennis Memorial

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 17, 2015—This year’s budding 2-year-old Paint superstar at Remington Park is Painted Turnpike. Friday night, he continued to build his resume with a come-from-behind effort to win the $22,500 Victoria Ennis Memorial Stakes.

Painted Turnpike dominated his foes in March to win the $140,000 Oklahoma Paint & Appaloosa Futurity, scoring by margin of 1-1/2 lengths. Friday, he was great to win by the neck margin he accomplished, after a sluggish beginning left him playing catch-up.

Owned and bred in Oklahoma by Nolan Pevehouse of Webbers Falls, Okla. and trained by Matt Whitekiller, Painted Turnpike rallied under Cody Smith, catching Bull who had a perfect start and an early lead. Painted Turnpike caught Bull in the last half of the race and then wore him down to inch away in the final strides of the 330-yard event, crossing the finish in a quick :16.736 seconds over a fast track. WL Mr Worldwide was along for third, 1-3/4 lengths behind the winner.

The heavy wagering favorite at 1-5 odds, Painted Turnpike paid $2.60 to win, $3 to place and $2.10 to show. Bull paid $4.80 to place and $3.20 to show. WL Mr Worldwide paid $2.20 to show.

The Victoria Ennis Memorial is for Oklahoma-bred Paint and Appaloosa 2-year-olds. The race is named after Ennis, a prominent breeder of Appaloosas in Oklahoma and a member of the Appaloosa Horse Club Hall of Fame.

Painted Turnpike is a Paint by Pyc Paint Your Wagon (QH) from the SF Royal Quick Flash mare High Class Turnpike. The winner’s share of the Ennis Memorial is $13,392, moving Painted Turnpike’s earnings to $73,204. He has won all three of his career races, already with two stakes triumphs.

Racing for owner Buddy Albin, Bull is a Cartel Success (QH)colt from the Texas Hero mare Memories Of Texas. Saddled by Randy Hill and ridden by Jorge Torres, Bull earned $4,464 for the effort. Bill Price is the breeder.

WL Mr Worldwide is also by Pyc Paint Your Wagon (QH) and out of the Texas Hero mare Texas Fourwinds. Jeff Dean conditions the brown gelding for Wade Leggett. Bred by Charles Leggett, he was ridden by G.R. Carter, Jr. and picked up $2,445 for the effort.

Hang On Tight, Awesome Barney, Mt Pyc and Face Paint completed the field.

Stakes racing will dominate a rich program on Saturday night as a total of $1.4 million in purses will be on the line over the 12-races, led by the $827,000 Remington Park Futurity. The main event is the richest futurity for state-bred Quarter Horses in the sport. Oklahoma-breds will also be featured in the $306,000 Remington Park Derby for 3-year-olds and the $70,000 Laico Bird Stakes for 2-year-olds. The Grade 2, $50,000 Bob Moore Memorial is set for older Quarter Horses while the Paints & Appaloosas will compete in the $30,000 Mister Lewie Memorial.

The first race on Saturday is at 6pm. Sunday afternoon racing begins at 1:30pm.

Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the $827,000 Remington Park Futurity on Saturday, April 18.
