Wagon Full Of Gold Surprises In Texas Classic Derby Trials

GRAND PRAIRIE, TX—OCTOBER 24, 2014—All American Futurity(G1) finalists Wagon Full Of Gold surprised a strong field in the second trial for the Texas Classic Derby(G1) Friday getting his second win of the season impressively to set the top qualifying mark.

The field was determined tonight at Lone Star Park from four 440 yard trial races. The 10 fastest three-year-olds that gained entry to the $291,868 Derby will return to the North Texas raceway on Saturday November 15th to vie for the winner's share of the purse to the 22nd running of the Grade 1 event for 3-year-old American Quarter Horses.

Jockey Jorge Bourdieu booted Wagon Full Of Gold home by half-a-length at 12-1 odds over multiple stakes winner Separatist Firstdown and All American Derby fourth place finisher Big Dashing Perry. His time of :21.228 seconds, a 98 speed index established the top qualifying mark.

Jill Giles conditions the Pyc Paint Your Wagon gelding for the partnership of Melvin Neugebauer, Ezra Lee and herself. Bred in Oklahoma by Ezra and Toby Dahl, the 3-year-old's record stands at (8) 4-1-1 and Friday's trial purse pushed his earnings past the $100,000 mark. He is out of the Bully Bullion mare Cheyennes Bullion.

AQHA Champion jockey Cody Jensen rode Rainbow Derby(G1) winner Houdini to an easy three-quarter length win in the first trial to set the second fastest time of :21.289, a 97 speed index.

Jose Villafranco conditions the earner of nearly $1.1 million for owner/breeder Ellen Kennedy Racing, LLC..

Also third in the All American Derby, in his last start, Houdini's career record stands at (15) 9-3-2. The Valiant Hero gelding is out of the Takin On The Cash mare Pure Oklahoma.

Four horses qualified from Wagon Full Of Gold's trial including third fastest qualifier Lil Famous Dash (26-1), a royally bred daughter of One Famous Eagle out of the "Blue Hen" mare Dash Master Miss. Judd Kearl saddled the Texas homebred for Scarlett Hill Farm Inc. Ridden by Rodrigo Vallejo, the sorrel miss posted a :21.324 time to earn a 94 speed index. The Texas Classic Derby(G1) final will be her first start against stakes company.

Rocketair scored a nose win over This Eagles Gone in the final trial to get the seventh fastest time of :21.499, a 92 speed index. Clinton Crawford conditions the graded stakes winning son of Jumpn for owners Preston and Karen Cloud. Bob Moore Farms, LLC bred the winner of last year's Black Gold Championship Futurity(RG3) from the First Down Dash mare Rivanne. Ridden by Ivan Carnero, he has earned more than $231,000.
