ALBUQUERQUE, NM—SEPTEMBER 20, 2014—Following the scratch of fastest qualifier Regal First Moon, Montauk became the post-race betting favorite and proved her backers well as she galloped to a 3½ length victory over First Power Flash in the $118,142 New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity on Saturday at The Downs in Albuquerque. Jess A Whistlin finished a head back in the show position.
Racing for owner Pedro Carrillo, the Dashair filly completed the 400 yard course in :19.488 seconds, a 95 speed index against a 12 mph headwind. Jockey Jimmy Coates had the riding call for trainer Tony Gallegos.
It was the third career win in five starts for Montauk and the $59,072 winner's purse boosted her total earnings to $74,112. Richard Franco bred the sorrel miss form the Dean Miracle mare Old Lady Mitchell. She earned $14,177 for the effort.
Denny and Carla Feerer are the owner/breeder of third place finisher Jess A Whistlin. Dominic Duree conditions the Jess A Chicks filly from the Royal Quick Dash mare Sm Whistle Britches. Ridden by jockey Benito Baca, Jess A Whistlin earned $14,177.
