Trainer Joiner Stays Hot With First Down Dash Win at Ruidoso

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—AUGUST 31, 2014—Trainer Mike Joiner scored his second stakes win as many days at Ruidoso Downs when Catch Billy The Kid won the first running of the $100,000 First Down Dash on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday, Joiner sent out Dm Streakn Thru Fire to win the Grade 1, $200,000 All American Gold Cup.

The Cody Jensen-ridden Catch Billy The Kid scored his first win of 2014 with a :21.718 time for the 440 yards.

Her O Don Won, the 9-5 favorite, was three-quarters-of-a-length behind Catch Billy The Kid for second and it was another one-half length back to third-place finisher Cruzin.

Billy Smith, Lyle Guillory and J Bar 7 Ranch’s Catch Billy The Kid broke extremely well from the starting gate and went straight to the lead with a wide path to the finish line. He was never seriously threatened on his way to the 9-1 upset score.

A gelding by FDD Dynasty, Catch Billy The Kid made each of his three previous 2014 starts this summer at Ruidoso Downs. His best efforts have come at the end of the summer season. He was second in his trial to the Grade 1, $1.9 million All American Derby in his previous out. La Feliz Montana Ranch, LLC bred him from the Mr Jess Perry mare Jess Significant.

Joiner is primed for more success this weekend. He has Kates Dynasty and J Bar in the All American Derby later on Sunday’s program. On Labor Day, he will saddle Tempting Destiny and Thunderball B in the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity.

Russell Harris saddled Her O Don Won for owner/breeder Richard Scott. Larry Payne rode the Valiant Hero gelding out of Miss Shivers, by Feature Mr Jess. He earned $18,000 for the effort.

Cruzin, a Swingin Jess gelding out of Spill Perfume by Tommy de Great, races for Edin Elizondo and Juvenal Sanchez. Alejandro Chavez trains with Adrian Ramos riding. Bred by Harris Racing Stables Inc. and Booream, the Texas-bred picked up $10,000.

Quick Dynasty, Highest Fire, Fire Tested, Skuze Pleeze, Spirit Leader, Rock Princess and Viva Sin Tacha completed the field.
