Josie Bassett Tops Sweetwater Derby Trials

ROCK SPRINGS, WY—AUGUST 17, 2014—Multiple stakes-placed Josie Bassett drew clear and won handily while posting the top qualifying time Sunday afternoon in the Sweetwater Derby at Sweetwater Downs in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from the two trail races contested will return to the Wyoming racecourse Saturday, August 30 and vie for the winner's share of a $12,500-added purse going 400 yards.

Jockey Justin Vanderwoude rode Josie Bassett to the top 400 yards time of :19.453 seconds, a 98 speed index for trainer Ron Moosman. Jim Nebker owns-and-bred the Maknmoves filly out of Eyes Rockin On, by Mr Eye Opener.

Stakes-placed Czechs Effort finished a half-length back to get the second fastest time of :19.491 seconds, a 97 speed index. Tyson Lusk was up for trainer Josh Taylor. Also a homebred, Jim Quinn owns the Corona Czech filly.

Trainer Bret Vickery saddled Dreams Of Winning to victory in the second trial for owners D. Utley, R. Williams and R. Yardley. Oscar Cervantes rode the Stylalistic filly to a :19.545, a 96 speed index, to garner the third fastest time. Peggy Sulser and Jay Lynn bred the sorrel miss in Utah from the Proudest Effort mare Fulfill My Dreams.

Trials for the 89 & Under Stakes and the Sweetwater Claiming Futurity were also contested on Sunday's race card. Both finals will be run back on Saturday, August 30.

All of the horses entered in the claiming futurity trials had to enter for a $5,000 tag. Trainer/owner Luis Gonzalez claimed fastest qualifier Quick Agent from owner Les Sweeting and Jeff Games and trainer Ron Moosman. Fourth fastest qualifier Dashin Cherry and sixth fastest qualifier Brooks Fly Away were also claimed.

The lightly raced 5-year-old Rgr Mr Sergio broke his maiden in the second trial for the 89 & Under Stakes to post the top qualifying time. The Mr Jess Berry gelding completed the 350 yards in a quick :17.343 seconds, to earn a 98 speed index in only his second career start. Ted Sanchez trains Rgr Mr Sergio for Treto Maria. David and Ross Hinkins bred the gelding in Utah from the Hugo Streakin mare Hugo Venus.
