Graded Stakes Winner Pavel Headlines New Mexico Breeders' Futurity Trials

BY MICHAEL CUSORTELLI
FARMINGTON, NM—MAY 1, 2024—Pavel, a graded stakes winning son of the Corona Cartel stallion Czar Cartel MV owned and trained by Jorge Luis Sanchez Jr., is one of 55 state-bred 2-year-olds entered in Friday's New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Friday's 350-yard trials will meet in the May 18, $120,000-added final.

Pavel will be stretching out in distance off of his head victory as the fastest qualifier in the 300-yard, $355,000 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park on April 6. A $6,000 yearling purchase at last year's New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the bay gelding has earned $174,666 from three races.

Pavel drew the rail post and will be ridden by Luis Martinez in the second of six trials.

Adelita Lopez's JBP In Red, a sorrel daughter of the Game Patriot stallion Jet Black Patriot and an $8,700 yearling buy at last year's New Mexico-Bred Sale is coming off of an eighth-place finish as the ninth-fastest qualifier in the New Mexican Spring Futurity. Ebert Munoz trains the filly.

JBP In Red drew post 2 and will be ridden by Sergio Dominguez in the fourth heat.
