El Panadero Squeaks In AQRA Quarter Horse Derby Consolation

PHOENIX, AZ—MAY 4, 2024—As the post-time favorite El Panadero held off a bid from Rebs Regalo to win the $23,000 AQRA Quarter Horse Derby Consolation (not black type) by a neck Saturday afternoon at Turf Paradise.

Jockey Joseph Belloc, Jr. rode the son of multiple stakes sire Im A Fancy Pyc to his first career win while clocking :18.076 seconds for the 350 yards.

Trainer Armando Castellanos conditions the Arizona homebred for owner-breeder Miguel Reynoza.  Bred from the Chicks Regard mare Black Storm Regard, El Panadero used the $14,260 derby consolation winner's purse to increase his earnings total to $21,205.

Runner-up Rebs Regalo earned $4,600 for his second-place finish. Trainer Jesus Fernando Ortega, Sr. named jockey Rick Oliver to ride the son of El Regalo Espanglish for owner Jo Ann Di Flippo. Winless in four starts, Rebs Regalo was bred by Sharon Denham from the Shazoom mare Guitar Superstition.

Wanted Icon finished 1-1/2 lengths back to earn $2,300 for owner-breeders Juan Carlos and Alvaro Velazquez. Jockey Luis Valenzuela had the riding call aboard the One Famous Icon filly for trainer Heraclio Botello.  Wanted Icon is out of the Country Chicks Man mare What I Want.   

Mister Loco To You and Copechi completed the field.
